Green Houston
Houston, a city known as the Energy Capital of the World, is also a progressive place where environmental initiatives abound. It's entirely possible for visitors to take a completely green trip to Houston—right down to the environmentally-friendly visitors' guide (download this pdf version instead of printing).
Did you know...
The EPA's Green Power Partnership hailed the City of Houston as the No.1 municipal purchaser of green power in the nation and a crucial leader in the alternative energy trend – with 25% of the City of Houston's total electricity purchased from wind energy. Also, Houston was named one of the 10 greenest cities in the U.S. by causes.com in 2013."
Check out the city's Green Building Resource Center for information on sustainability practices and recycling as well as equipment for energy conservation. The center offers regular tours.
You can learn about many of the sustainability programs the city has initiated in recent years from the person who started them herself, Sustainability Director Laura Spanjian.
